 E. Answer the following questions in about 20-30 words.

1. Which are the major waterbodies on Earth?

Ans: The major waterbodies on Earth are oceans, seas, rivers, bays, gulfs, straits and setuaries. 


2. What are oceans? Name the five major oceans.

Ans: The huge waterbodies on the surface of the Earth is called oceans. All the oceans of the world are interconnected with each other. The five major oceans according to their size are - the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean and Arctic Ocean.


3. What are seas? Name some important seas.

Ans: A sea is a body of saline water that is a part of the ocean. It is smaller and shallower. Sea are usually located close to the edge of a landmass or continent or are attached to a continent. Some examples of such marginal seas are Caribbean Sea, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, South China Sea and Baltic Sea.


4. What are rivers? Name some important rivers of Asia.

Ans: A river is a stream of water that flows in a channel, down the slope of the land pulled by the force of gravity, and finally into a lake or sea. The place where the river originates is called its source. The place where the river ends its journey is called its mouth. 

Some important rivers are: The Mackenzie River, The Saint Lawrence River, The Rihne, The Danube, The Ganga, The Indus, Huang He.


5. Why can’t we use sea water for drinking?

Ans: More than 97 per cent of the Earth's water is found in the oceans, but its too salty for human use.
